Why I like action/adventure movies

I chose the action/adventure genre because I enjoy the thrill and suspense of action/adventure films. In these types of films, the characters often go on adventures and explore. They typically come across antagonists and are forced to fight them, resulting in action as well. For example, one of my favorite movies, Jumanji (2017) exemplifies this. In the movie the four main characters go through the in-real-life video game of Jumanji. They are made to explore the area, solve riddles, and fight animals and men who are attacking them. While Jumanji is more of an adventure film, as the characters must find a new place on the map in order to advance to the next level, there is still a good amount of action present as well. The opening of Jumanji shows a backstory to how the game was found, showing the date “1996” at the bottom of the opening scene. It shows a calm beach with the sunshine peeking out of the tops of the trees and the waves rolling onto the beach. There are two runners that can be seen in the background. As the camera begins to zoom in on a mysterious box on the beach, the famous Jumanji music starts to play, with heavy drums captivating the viewers' attention. When another runner comes out of the foreground and runs towards the box, the music crescendos and suddenly stops. This leaves the viewer eager to find out what happens next. The runner then stops, brushes the sand off of the box, picks it up and carries it home. The viewer once again wants to find out what the box is and what is going to happen next, which makes it an action/adventure film.

Another action/adventure film that I enjoy is Jurassic World. In this movie, a new dinosaur is created within the Jurassic theme park. However, the intelligent and monstrous dinosaur escaped and was loose within the park. This led the main characters to search, or adventure, for the dinosaur, which also resulted in a lot of action as well. In the beginning of the film there is not a lot that relates to the actual film genre, as it just sets the background and informs the viewer of what’s happening. However, in the very first seconds of the film it shows a claw stomping down on the ground with a very loud noise. Because the viewer most likely already knows that the film is about dinosaurs, it can be assumed that this claw belongs to a dinosaur. Although, once the scene continues, the camera zooms out and shows a black crow jumping around on the icy ground. While this is not exactly inviting, the next scene shows a woman loading a car with suitcases, which leads the viewer to wonder where the characters are going. Therefore, Jurassic World is an action/adventure film that showcases the genre, even though the opening doesn’t display what the rest of the movie does.
