Once Upon A Time Examples

I chose to do my examples from the show that I am still watching. At this point, the storyline relates to Arthur of Camelot and Merlin the wizard. Most of these clips focus on Merlin, the magical wizard.

Parallelism: for this type of edit I chose to compare the sun and a mirage that the characters were seeing. When watching, I noticed how the scene started off with a view of the sun, and then went down to the characters. I continued watching and noticed the twinkling light of the mirage, which reminded me of the bright sun at the beginning of the episode. These two scenes were connected through a matching element, being the bright light.

Contrast: the shots I chose to compare showed the difference between the barren, arid wasteland and the beautiful, lush countryside. When watching I noticed a big change in scenery, which I thought was a good representation of contrast. It starts off with the two men, running down the sandy hill to what they think is a mirage. However, what they approached was a magical goblet that can grant, only the chosen ones, with magic. Merlin was able to retrieve this magic, but his friend unfortunately was not (and died). One he had this magic, Merlin unknowingly turned the whole landscape into a green forest.

Simultaneity: Surprisingly, it was much more difficult to find an example of two things happening at once, until I came across these scenes. The first scene shows a group of people (the heroes) trying to get into the castle through the underground tunnels, to retrieve the magical sword, Excalibur. Meanwhile, the other scene shows King Arthur and Queen Genevieve trying to make a potion to harm them with. Because the scenes are back to back, I chose to keep them in the same video.

Symbolism: One main symbol in this episode are the pink flowers, as there is a different symbol shown in each episode. The flowers were first shown when Merlin, and his future wife, Nimue, met in Merlin's village. The second scene shows Merlin holding a flower to give to Nimue while they talk. The third video is shortly after the second one, showing Merlin take a leaf of the flower and turn it into a ring for Nimue, indicating that he is proposing to her.

LeitMotiff: This scene shows what is going on in Merlin's head and what he is currently experiencing. Because he is an almighty wizard, he has the ability to see the future. In this scene, Merlin and Nimue are looking for the missing piece of Excalibur, but so is the dark one. While looking, Merlin senses something and then sees the dark one's face in a vision. This shows the comparison of what Merlin is currently experiencing and what is going on in his head.
